I have this routine of erasing straightness from movies and TV shows, to the extent that I often remember things as explicitly gay, when really theres heteroromance as a main focus. For example, in this years series of The Bachelor on Australian television, I was convinced that the main human Blake was gay, and that his top two women left at the end Sam and Lisa were in love (I still stalk their Instagram accounts and hold to this theory). I was recently asked by a friend why I was so insistent on seeing queerness in vertical romances, like, isnt this some kind of contrary homophobia?! I answered that there are is so little queerness represented in the mainstream that by default I see homosexual storylines in some caring of attempt to unlock up space. In recent years, movies and television shows geared toward women have idealized the gay male acquaintance. Shows like Sex and the City, for example, seem to suggest that no womans circle of friends is complete without at least one nice gay friend. Maybe were reading a bit too much into this, but were pretty sure this fictional phenomenon has at least some roots in reality. In our encounter, women love gay men.
