History of Wilmington's gay bars shows being out and proud was dangerous

On June 11, during the Port City Pride Festival in downtown Wilmington, well over a thousand people filled Dock Street between Front and Second streets, which had been blocked off for the occasion.

People waved Pride flags big and small and wore all manner of rainbow-strewn gear and wild, colorful costumes. From a stage in the middle of the street, DJs blasted move club hits to a thick crowd of dancers. Several drag queens performed, raking in flocks of bills from the audience.

For Tara Nicole Brooks, who's been performing drag in downtown Wilmington for more than 30 years, "It was great to notice it. Looking out at everyone from the stage, it was a tiny overwhelming," she said. "Not only everyone out there celebrating themselves, but unbent people supporting them."

There was a time, however, when being "out and proud" in Wilmington was hazardous. If LGBTQ+ people wanted to be their genuine selves at a Wilmington bar in the '70s, '80s or even the '90s, they generally did so in the shadows.

I'm 26 and graduating college this semester. I've done some explore on-line, but I am having trouble finding a good city to action to. I would cherish to find site that would give me some suggestions. What I'm looking for is a urban area on the coast nearby the beach. Virginia or points south would be ideal. With a decent sized gay community. Also I want to reside on the east coast. Any advise would be wonderful. Thanks ^^.

Wilmington is only city that I can think of with the largest same-sex attracted community of all coastal towns.
And it a real small gay people. The biggest attraction is the movie production
Wilmington ranks 3rd in film production though it in its final season TV show
One Tree Hill is filmed here. Great luck finding work Wilmington
unemployment rate is 10.6
All other coastal towns in NC are very small and lock down in the winter p
