When I first moved to Madrid two years ago, I knew from a previous trip that I was in cherish with the city and it was one of the most open places I’d ever been. Deciding which neighborhood to reside in was a question as I really only knew Chueca – Madrid’s quintessential gay neighborhood. As I discovered more about the city, I realized that Madrid is complete of diverse areas each offering their own unusual style. Luckily for the LGBT community, Madrid truly is one of the most gay-friendly cities in Spain and even around the world. In reality, it’s estimated that more than half a million LGBT people live in Madrid, so no matter which neighborhood you elect, you’ll find an unseal and welcoming community where you can be yourself. However, for those who really want to locate the best neighborhoods for the gay community, there are a few in the city that foremost the list.

1. Chueca: The Largest Gay Neighborhood in Spain

   Things to do in Madrid, Spain

   If you are looking for the gay area in Madrid you don’t demand to look far.

   It is completely normal to glimpse same-ടex couples holding hands, kissing and being loved-up just like any other couple city wide.

   In some cities, once you depart the ‘gay area’ or neighbourhood you feel the need to let move of your partners hand – in Madrid this is not the case at all and it’s one of the reasons we love this city.

   However, like most cities around the world, Madrid does have it’s main same-sex attracted area/neighbourhood where you will find the majority of gay bars, clubs, cafes and shops etc.

   The Main Gay Area in Madrid: Chueca

   You have arrived!

   The main gay area in Madrid is called Chueca and is named after Federico Chueca who could be considered Madrid’s first lgbtq+ icon.

   The area spans about 1km north of Gran Via (one of the main streets) and east to west between Calle Hortaleza and Paseo de Recoletos. The main bulk of gay bars in Chueca are found within ten minutes walking distance of Plaza De Chueca – where the metro station is found.

   Chueca is walkable from the ‘city centre’ (Plaza Del Sol) or just a couple of metro stops.
