'Grey's Anatomy' star Jesse Williams makes a case for why straight actors can play gay roles in his Broadway debut, 'Take Me Out'
On the surface, Jesse Williams is not much different from Darren Lemming, the baseball superstar he plays in "Take Me Out."
He's biracial and charming and handsome, and for much of his life, he played baseball. One or all of those things combined has probably helped him step in and thrive in the elite circles he frequents now as an thespian and producer, who's perhaps most recognizable for his fan-favorite role as Dr. Jackson Avery on ABC's hit medical drama "Grey's Anatomy."
Despite these commonalities, the media, including the Recent York Times, has wondered whether Williams, a straight player, should play a lgbtq+ character. He is more talented than the material he's gotten in the past on "Grey's Anatomy," but it's a valid question, particularly given how frequently Williams is marketed to women as a dreamy (and very heterosexual) heartthrob.
It's a conversation that has been coming up regularly in Hollywood as more queer actors communicate candidly about their casting experiences.

Grey's Anatomy real-life romance: Who has Dr Jackson Avery star Jesse Williams dated?
Talking about the beginning of his relationship with Paige to GQ, Williams said: "We came from very different worlds.
“She's very feminine and into spiritual planes, astrology. I'm very practical, fact-based, and masculine.
“I was having a wild, unfamiliar, uncomfortable experience because it was all just happening in a very spiritual way—a way that's not how I usually arrange things in my life.
"But I'd been going through a lot of transitions in life, and I had deliberately positioned myself to be open to saying yes, to be available to whatever, more than I had in the past.
“I don't often let things happen to me. But because I had decided I was going to be unseal, I didn't pull the brake like I normally would.
"I didn't try to control, or position, or take a breath, and I just went along for the ride, as scary as that was and has been."

Jesse Williams is playing a gay baseball player? And he’ll be naked too?
Actor Jesse Williams (most recognizable for his work on Grey’s Anatomy) is gearing up for his latest project. Williams is preparing for a stage recital in the play Take Me Out. In the play, Williams will operate out “the lead role of Darren Lemming, a star baseball player who must overcome prejudice from teammates and friends after he reveals he’s gay.”
Now that he’s officially no longer a part of Grey’s Anatomy, after vanishing the show last month, Williams is ready to take on more challenging roles. And this queer baseballer will certainly be that. And that’s not just because he’ll be playing a gay runner, but also because he’ll be naked for part of it.
As Williams distributed while appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, there will be a lengthy moment involving full-frontal nudity.
“What?!” Williams mocked surprise when guest host, tWitch, asked if he was prepared for the scene. “Yeah, that’s true. I got the memo.”
He then added, “The character does call for a little bit of nudity, so what I will say about that is it’s terrifying in all the right ways. I̵
