The Stonewall Riots in Novel York City were ignored by Chicago&#;s newspapers and it was harassment as usual for the city&#;s gay citizens: lesbians wearing men&#;s shirts were arrested for cross-dressing; an over-zealous pretty-boy cop named Sgt. John Manley continued his purge on gay men in the rest room adjacent Lincoln Park Conservatory; and the cops, still out of control from the Chicago Democratic Convention the previous year, busted numerous gay bars, including the 21 Club, the Azure Pub and the Alameda.

And yet, in spite of the seemingly stagnant waters, there were tell-tell signs of a maelstrom stirring, as two months after Stonewall a raid at the Annex bar prompted a scuffle between patrons and police – at the time it was unheard of for Chicago gays to resist arrest. In another development, a University of Chicago student named Henry Weimoff started a Gay Liberation group on campus.

Chicago Pride Parade  

Chicago's Pride celebration consists of a entire month of festivities and events, culminating with the Chicago Pride Parade, which traditionally takes place the last Sunday of June.

 

Chicago Pride Fest takes place along North Halsted St. in the North Side neighborhood colloquially referred to a ‘Boystown’ the weekend prior to the parade. 


The Chicago Pride Parade (June 29, 11am)

The 54th annual Chicago Pride Parade steps off at 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 29,  from the corners of Sheridan and Broadway ( North) on Chicago's north side.

 

The parade treks through the north side of the capital, ending near the intersection of Diversey Parkway and Sheridan Road in Lincoln Park, walking through some of the city's most vibrant neighborhoods.

 

 

The annual march, which started as a protest march in after the Stonewall Riots in New York City, has grown into the city's second-largest parade of nearly entries, typically attracting more than 1 million people to multiple northside neighborhoods, particularly East Lakeview.

Chicago Pride Parade Grand Marshal

Several grand marshals have been announced, with more to come, for this year's parade that marks 50 years since the Stonewall Uprising that changed the course of LGBTQ history forever, it was announced May 8 by Lgbtq+ fest Chicago, the organizers of Chicago's annual gay celebration parade.

Chicago's Honorary Pride Celebration Grand Marshal: Lori Lightfoot

Mayor-elect Lori Lightfoot has been named Honorary Grand Marshal for this year's Chicago Self-acceptance Parade.

Chicago's 50th annual Celebration Parade steps off at noon on Sunday, June

Lightfoot was overwhelmingly elected to lead the Windy City in a historic election on April 2. She is the first African-American woman and first openly lesbian mayor in Chicago's history.

For the first time, there will be an Honorary Grand Marshal, still to be announced, plus a Youth Grand Marshal, several Legacy Grand Marshals and an Organizational Grand Marshal.
