Human Rights Campaign Condemns Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey for Signing Discriminatory Anti-Trans Bathroom Ban, “Don’t Speak Gay or Trans” Bill Into Law

Governor Ivey signed House Bill 322, bans K-12 students from using bathrooms and university facilities consistent with gender identity and enacts“Don’t Utter Gay or Trans” provisions in grades K-5. In response to this discriminatory move, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) — the nation’s largest lesbian, male lover, bisexual, transgender and gender non-conforming (LGBTQ+) civil rights management — condemned the governor’s action that needlessly harms transgender kids and benefits no one.

House Bill 322, passed on the concluding day of the legislative session, puts Alabama in direct contravention of federal law and will immediately spur litigation which Alabama taxpayers will be funding for years.

Human Rights Campaign Alabama State Director Carmarion D. Anderson-Harvey issued the following statement in reaction to Governor Ivey’s signature:

“Governor Ivey should be ashamed of the move she has taken today to target trans kids in Alabama for exclusion and discriminatory treatment. This legislation helps no one and no constituency that stands t

In the race to be the most anti-LGBTQ+ declare in the union, Alabama is pulling ahead.

Gov. Kay Ivey (who, get this, is a Republican!) signed a law making the provision of gender-affirming tend to anyone under age 19 a felony. Once the law goes into effect next month, doctors who provide this crucial medical support could wind up spending 10 years in prison.

Finding she did not yet have her fill of hate for the day, Ivey also signed a ban on trans students from using restrooms that align with their gender identity at school AND a disallow on ALL discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity in grades K-5.

Last year, Alabama banned transitioned athletes from playing on sports teams. You realize, just in case you thought this anti-LGBTQ+ rampage had come out of nowhere.

Make no mistake, the current wave of anti-LGBTQ+ bills sweeping the nation is coming soon to a government near you, if it hasn’t already. Any locality run by a Republican majority in the United States will find themselves subjected to anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.

In Michigan, where the House and the Senate are both restricted by Republicans, a recent “prayer” by a Republican senator Sen. Lana Theis went as follows:

Governor Kay Ivey is speaking out against an accusation that she is a lesbian.  She sat down with TV stations today to strongly rebuke the claim.

The attack came in a Twitter post from State Rep. Patricia Todd (D-Birmingham), the only gay member of the Alabama Legislature. She tweeted:

“Will someone out her for God’s sake….I contain heard for years that she is gay and moved her girlfriend out of her house when she became Gov. I am sick of closeted elected officials.”

Todd hasn’t made herself available to acknowledge questions about where she got her alleged knowledge. She isn’t running for re-election to the seat she has held since 2006 and is moving to Orlando, Florida, to lead a gay rights group.

In an on-camera interview, Ivey responded:

“It’s disgusting. It’s false. It’s a baldface lie.”

Ivey continued:

“It’s disgusting because they’re not telling the truth. People ought to tell the truth, not spread unfounded rumors and lies, and that’s what she’s
