*This article contains spoilers for the entire Metal Gear Solid series*

The Metal Gear Solid franchise is probably one of the most paradoxical game series ever created.

For every poignant and meaningful moment, there’s also several scenes of guys peeing themselves and lengthy discussions about pop tradition. For every three-dimensional and empathetic character, there’s a guy who can regulate bees and a literal vampire.

This kind of tonal dissonance is something that Metal Gear prides itself on. There aren’t many franchises that can transport you to tears while you’re still recovering from fighting a cybernetically enhanced president of the Merged States.

However, there is one aspect of the franchise that makes it rise out, even beyond the cyborg ninjas and cardboard boxes: its approach to LGBT representation.

Though the last canonical game came out back in 2015, the choices made still keep up, especially for an action title. In proof, I’d go as far as to say that Metal Gear has some of the best LGBT representation in gaming history- and I’m here to tell you why.

But first, what’s the story?

  • Big Boss and Revolver Ocelot better Snake and Otacon in the "barely even subtext" category: a Japanese commentary track confirms that Ocelot and Big Boss from the minute they first met shared a "Pure Love". [1].
  • Metal Gear Compact 3 plays out exactly like Ocelot has a crush on Naked Snake. He spends almost all of their encounters desperate to impress Snake, tracking his advice and developing his technique, with their battle having all the usual MGS homoeroticism ("I've never felt a tension like this before."). He gets turned on by torture for the first time because it was Snake getting it, and after Snake escapes he discovers that Ocelot had stolen his food, to eat the same things Snake eats. EVA hassles Snake repeatedly through the game about how infatuated Ocelot is with him; he remains oblivious to Ocelot's crush, which results in EVA laughing at him. Ocelot disgustedly denies suggested attraction to EVA, yet fails to act so when the similar is suggested about Snake. For his part S
The way he admires the boss, the way he looks at him, how loyal he is to him, and how he takes Big Boss's advice so much makes me wonder does Ocelot like him more than just a friend? Hmmm? Some ulterior motive? Cmon, we need more queers in the industry dammit, anyone think Ocelot is gay?

I used to watch my brother play the Metal Gear Solid games and it’s actually really fascinating to look at Hideo Kojima’s games in the context of how homosexuality is viewed in Japan.

I’m not going to speculate on Kojima’s own sexuality, I’ll leave that to himself, but his games are famous for entity very horny, homoerotic and having a ridiculously tall number of bisexual male characters. People will show out that they’re all villains, but that’s just the explicitly bisexual characters. His two main characters, Snake from Metal Gear Solid and Sam from Death Stranding, are also implied to not be straight.

This is where Japanese culture and the extensive lore of Kojima’s works comes in.

Homosexuality is taboo in the west and Japan for distinct reasons. In the west it’s seen as sinful, but in Japan it’s seen as disruptive. Don’t make a fuss. Don’t call attention to yourself in any way. Don’t mess with the status quo. Most queer people choose not to show up out to their families for this reason. And to make matters worse, even if a minor majority of Japanese people are in favor of queer people having rights the government is very conservative and it’s even illegal to depi
